Powerboat driver, builder, administrator
Inducted into the APBA Hall of Champions in three consecutive decades (1980s, 1990s, 2000s), Lauterbach’s accomplishments are almost too many to list. A winner of more than 300 races, Lauterbach is a 12-time national champion, 6-time National High Point Champion, 5-time North American champion, 7-time UIM (Union Internationale Motonautique) world recordholder and 9-time APBA recordholder. Larry began working in father Henry’s raceboat shop when he was 15. Over the next 30 years, the two MSHFA nominees worked side-by-side building more than 250 boats, except for a two-year stint (1966-68) when the younger Lauterbach served two tours in Vietnam. Other noteworthy achievements include a record-setting 24 United States Grand Prix wins, 13 Eastern Division titles, 3 Western Division titles and victory in the 1989 Thunder on the Ohio in the Winston Eagle unlimited hydroplane. An APBA member since 1963, he served on the Board of Directors for eight years. He was elected to APBA’s highest honor — the APBA Honor Squadron — in 2009 and inducted into the Canadian Boating Federation Hall of Fame in 2021.
